‘Did I hear someone broke into your place last night,’ asks Kathy.

‘Kind off. They hit my roomie pretty hard, and I had to take her to NCH this morning.’

‘Is she okay,’ asks Dene.

‘She’s shaken up, and probably won’t go clubbing for a few nights. But she’ll be fine.’

‘Was anything taken?’

‘My gunsafe.’

‘What? You must have had your gun with you. So it was empty, right?’

It wasn’t for my service piece. It was for a private gun. A P226 X5.’

‘A Sig Saur 9mm single action pistol. Steel barrel?’ says, Lee.

‘That’s the one.’

‘Where did you pick up one of these, Sammy?’ he asks, impressed.

‘I won it. Back when I was a State trooper, I won one of the annual shooting competitions. Maximum points in all rounds.’

I can see everyone is both surprised and impressed. It’s not something I’ve mentioned before.

What kind of safe did you have?’

‘The best. Solid steel with biometrics and a password required for entry.’

‘Is it the SentrySafe?’ asks Lee. ‘The one with the gas struts inside, so that when you get past the fingerprint and password, it pops open on its own?’

‘Yeah, that’s the one.’

‘Well, your gun’s going to be okay. No-one can break into one of these. Your thief will probably just throw it away. Check the dumpsters in your area.’
